Coaches Hall of Fame Inductee for 2009

John Nowa

John Nowa was born and raised in Pasadena,  playing Football and running Track at John Muir High School. After a couple of years of classes at PCC, John was drafted into the US Army. During his 2 years of active duty, he spent time in Vietnam as a combat soldier, was wounded, and awarded the Purple Heart Medal.

After returning home, John resumed his education at BYU, graduating with a BA in History, with a minor in PE. John also has an MA in Education from CSULA.

In 1973, John began his tenure with the AUSD, with 5 Years at Foothills JHS, followed by 6 years at First Avenue JHS, coaching Basketball, Football and Track and Field.

In 1984, John moved to Arcadia HS as a History Teacher, and Coaching Sophomore Baseball and JV Softball. 2 years later, John was promoted to the position of Head Softball Coach. From 1986 through 2000, his AHS Softball Teams were consistently recognized as one of the top programs in the San Gabriel Valley. His philosophy of playing in the best tournaments he could find, helped his teams to improve and be ready for league competition. During his 15 years as Head Coach, his teams qualified for the CIF Playoffs 12 times. On 3 different occasions, his teams advanced to the CIF Quarter Finals, losing twice to the eventual CIF Champion.

Based on his passion for coaching, and his ability to motivate his players to strive for their highest potential, the AHS Coaching Staff is proud to induct John into the Elbert Souders AHS Coaches Hall of Fame.

John is retiring from Arcadia High School, after a 36 year career with the Arcadia Unified School District, in June of 2009.

 Congratulations, John!!!
